Bistro Escondido

What better place to stay in Melaque, Mexico, than above a Bistro. We were a bit worried about noise and privacy at first, but after a week of living above Bistro Escondido we’re more worried about the savory smells wafting up from the kitchen. The Bistro is open every day except Wednesday, from 2pm to 10pm.

img_4419The menu is simple, but changes frequently, serving favorites like the blue cheese burger, home made onion rings, and fish and chips. We’ve sampled the coconut shrimp, chorizo and potato lettuce wraps, and the burger. Portions are generous, the food is delicious, and prices pale in comparison to home. They also have a full service bar.

img_4450Bistro Escondido is run by our landlord, Arianna, who also acts as hostess, bartender, dishwasher, and tourist information officer. Her mother, Leslie, is usually on hand to help out, if Arianna doesn’t have her running errands. The cook, Rosita, and waiter, Brian, complete the bistro staff.

The bistro is set up for casual dining outdoors, under a shady pergola-covered patio with colorful bougainvillea, coconut palms, and tropical fruit trees. If you’re overcome by the Mexican heat the bistro allows customers to use the spacious pool. It’s also available to rent for private parties or gatherings.

The only complaint we’ve heard is that Bistro Escondido is hard to find, but that’s the best part about it. It’s off the beaten path, in a quiet tropical paradise. It’s not a noisy bar on the beach and you can rest assured you will not be approached by someone trying to sell you jewelry or hammocks.img_4449
